Module 6 — Materials in Engineering Applications

Engineering material selection is always application-specific. The same material can be excellent in one environment and inappropriate in another because load, temperature, corrosion, manufacturing and inspection requirements differ.

Construction and infrastructure

Steel, concrete, glass, aluminum, polymers and composites are selected according to structural demand, durability, fire performance, constructability and lifecycle cost.

Aerospace and automotive

Weight reduction raises the value of aluminum, magnesium, titanium and composites, while turbines and exhaust systems demand alloys that retain strength at elevated temperatures.

Electronics and optoelectronics

Silicon, compound semiconductors, copper, aluminum, transparent conductors, dielectric materials and rare-earth elements enable devices, interconnects, displays and optical systems.

Biomaterials

Medical materials require not only mechanical performance but also biocompatibility, corrosion behavior, sterilization compatibility and predictable interaction with tissue.
