Lithium (Li): Properties, Batteries and Critical-Material Applications

Periodic Table Guide

Lithium is the lightest metal and a central material in rechargeable batteries. Its electrochemical potential and low atomic mass enable high-energy storage, but mining, refining, battery safety and recycling are major engineering and supply-chain considerations.

Why lithium is important for batteries

Lithium readily participates in reversible electrochemical reactions and has a very low atomic mass. Commercial lithium-ion batteries move lithium ions between host materials rather than repeatedly plating bulk lithium metal in ordinary operation. The cathode chemistry strongly influences voltage, energy density, cost and safety, while graphite remains a common anode material.

Battery chemistries

Common families include lithium iron phosphate and nickel-manganese-cobalt-based cathodes. Each represents a different balance of energy density, cycle life, thermal stability, raw-material exposure and cost. Emerging solid-state concepts aim to replace conventional liquid electrolytes with solid electrolytes and may enable different anode architectures, but manufacturing and interface challenges remain significant.

Other uses

Lithium compounds are used in glass and ceramics, lubricating greases, specialty chemicals and some pharmaceutical applications. Lithium additions can influence thermal-shock resistance and processing behavior in glass-ceramic systems.

Supply, recycling and sustainability

Lithium resources occur in brines and hard-rock deposits. Production route, water use, energy source, chemical consumption and local geology all influence environmental performance. Battery recycling can recover valuable materials and reduce dependence on virgin extraction, but collection, sorting, process economics and chemistry diversity affect the practical recovery route.

Key takeaways

  • This guide is written for practical engineering and technical understanding.
  • Property values can vary with purity, processing route, temperature, microstructure and test method.
  • For design or procurement decisions, verify values against the applicable material specification and current standard.

Frequently asked questions

Is lithium metal used directly in all lithium-ion batteries?

No. Conventional lithium-ion batteries usually store lithium within electrode host materials. Metallic lithium is used in some primary batteries and is being investigated for advanced rechargeable systems.

Why is lithium considered strategically important?

Demand from electric vehicles and stationary storage has made secure supply, refining capacity and recycling increasingly important to industrial policy.

Are lithium batteries inherently unsafe?

They can be used safely when cells, battery-management systems, thermal controls and protection systems are properly designed. Abuse, manufacturing defects and overheating can still lead to thermal runaway.
