Carbon Steel: Grades, Properties & Applications

Carbon steel is the broad family in which carbon is the principal strengthening addition and alloying additions are comparatively limited. Its behavior ranges from highly formable sheet to hard, wear-resistant high-carbon products.

Composition & metallurgy

Typical commercial grades span roughly 0.05–1.0% carbon, with specialty high-carbon compositions extending higher. Increasing carbon generally raises hardness and attainable strength while reducing ductility and weldability.

Common grades and standards

AISI/SAE 1006, 1010, 1018, 1020, 1045, 1050, 1060, 1075, 1080, 1095; structural and pressure products are also specified by ASTM/ASME and EN standards rather than SAE chemistry alone.

Typical applications

Sheet, plate, structural sections, pipes, shafts, gears, fasteners, rails, wire, springs, tanks, machinery and general fabrication.

Engineering characteristics

Economical, widely available, readily recyclable and available in many product forms. Heat treatment response depends strongly on carbon content and section size.

Known manufacturers and producer regions

China — China Baowu, Ansteel, HBIS, Shagang; India — Tata Steel, JSW Steel, SAIL; Japan — Nippon Steel, JFE Steel; South Korea — POSCO, Hyundai Steel; United States — Nucor, Cleveland-Cliffs, U.S. Steel; Europe — ArcelorMittal, thyssenkrupp Steel, voestalpine.

Selection checklist

Confirm product form, design code, strength level, toughness/impact requirement, service temperature, corrosion exposure, weldability, forming route, heat-treatment condition, dimensional tolerance, inspection level and mill certification. Do not substitute a “similar” grade solely from a cross-reference table without checking the governing specification.

Element Folio engineering reference. Grade ranges are typical and may vary by standard. Verify the latest ASTM/ASME, EN, JIS, API or other governing specification and the mill’s current product data before procurement.
