STEEL LIBRARY · WEATHERING STEEL

Weathering Steel (Corten-Type Steels)

Weathering steels are low-alloy structural steels designed to form a stable adherent oxide patina in suitable atmospheric exposure, reducing the need for conventional painting in appropriate applications.

Composition & metallurgy

Low carbon with controlled additions commonly including copper, chromium, nickel and phosphorus, depending on grade and product.

Common grades and standards

ASTM A588 and A242 are common US specifications; EN 10025-5 S355J2W/S355J0W and related grades are widely used in Europe. COR-TEN is a trademarked product name and should not be used as a generic grade designation.

Applications

Bridges, architectural façades, sculptures, rail infrastructure, transmission structures, containers and exposed structural steelwork.

Engineering characteristics

Atmospheric corrosion resistance can outperform ordinary carbon steel in alternating wet/dry exposure, but the protective patina may not develop in continuously wet, buried, marine-splash or chloride-heavy environments.

Known manufacturers and producer regions

United States — Nucor and plate/structural producers; Europe — SSAB, ArcelorMittal, Dillinger; Japan — Nippon Steel, JFE; India — Tata Steel, JSW; China — China Baowu and other major plate mills.

Before specifying or purchasing

Confirm governing standard and edition, product form and dimensions, delivery/heat-treatment condition, mechanical properties, toughness, welding requirements, corrosion or wear environment, inspection/NDT, traceability and mill test certification. Manufacturer capability varies by plant and product line.
