Rail & Railway Steel

Rail steels are high-strength pearlitic or heat-treated steels engineered for rolling-contact fatigue, wear resistance, weldability and long service under repeated wheel loading.

Composition & metallurgy

Generally medium-to-high carbon with manganese and carefully controlled cleanliness; premium rails may use alloying and head-hardening to improve wear and contact-fatigue resistance.

Common grades and standards

EN 13674 rail grades such as R260 and R350HT; AREMA rail specifications in North America; JIS and other national railway specifications define comparable product families.

Applications

Mainline rail, heavy-haul track, metro systems, crane rail, switches and crossings.

Engineering characteristics

Hardness, head profile, residual stress, straightness, internal cleanliness and ultrasonic quality are critical. Rail welding uses specialized flash-butt or aluminothermic procedures.

Known manufacturers and producer regions

Japan — Nippon Steel; Europe — voestalpine and ArcelorMittal; India — SAIL and other rail suppliers; China — major state and regional rail mills; North America — domestic rail producers and international supply.

Before specifying or purchasing

Confirm governing standard and edition, product form and dimensions, delivery/heat-treatment condition, mechanical properties, toughness, welding requirements, corrosion or wear environment, inspection/NDT, traceability and mill test certification. Manufacturer capability varies by plant and product line.
