Case-Hardening & Carburizing Steel
Case-hardening steels combine a hard wear-resistant surface with a tougher lower-carbon core.
Material and manufacturing basis
Low-carbon alloy steels are carburized or carbonitrided, quenched and tempered so carbon enrichment occurs mainly near the surface.
Common standards and grades
Common families include SAE 8620, 9310, 20MnCr5, 16MnCr5 and related Ni-Cr-Mo or Mn-Cr grades.
Typical applications
Gears, pinions, shafts, bearings, cams, transmission parts and wear-loaded machine components.
Engineering and procurement checks
Control case depth, surface carbon, retained austenite, distortion, core hardness, grinding stock and heat-treatment atmosphere.
Manufacturer selection
Source from a mill or qualified stockist able to supply the exact standard, grade, dimensions, delivery condition and certification required. Confirm manufacturer approval status, heat traceability, test certificates, marking and any project-specific third-party inspection.
Element Folio engineering reference. Always verify the latest governing standard, project specification and manufacturer data before procurement or design.
