Nitriding Steel
Nitriding steels are designed to form hard, wear-resistant nitride layers at temperatures below conventional carburizing heat-treatment temperatures.
Material and manufacturing basis
Alloying elements such as aluminium, chromium, molybdenum and vanadium promote stable nitrides. Suitable alloy steels may also be nitrided without being dedicated nitriding grades.
Common standards and grades
Examples include 31CrMoV9 and aluminium-containing nitriding grades, as well as nitrided 4140/4340-type steels in some applications.
Typical applications
Gears, dies, crankshafts, valve components, extrusion screws, precision shafts and wear surfaces.
Engineering and procurement checks
Nitriding provides high surface hardness with limited distortion, but compound-layer control, surface preparation and core condition are critical.
Manufacturer selection
Source from a mill or qualified stockist able to supply the exact standard, grade, dimensions, delivery condition and certification required. Confirm manufacturer approval status, heat traceability, test certificates, marking and any project-specific third-party inspection.
Element Folio engineering reference. Always verify the latest governing standard, project specification and manufacturer data before procurement or design.
