Free-Machining Steel
Free-machining steels are modified to improve chip breaking, cutting speed, surface finish and tool life in high-volume machining.
Engineering basis
Sulfur, lead in legacy grades, bismuth, calcium or controlled inclusions may be used depending on grade and regional restrictions.
Standards, grades or methods
SAE 11xx resulfurized steels, 12L14 leaded steel and European free-cutting grades such as 11SMn30/11SMnPb30 are common examples.
Typical applications
Screws, fittings, bushings, connectors, hydraulic components, turned parts and automatic-lathe products.
Critical checks
Machinability improvements can reduce transverse ductility, weldability and fatigue performance. Lead-containing grades face environmental and regulatory restrictions.
Good engineering practice
Use the current governing code or specification and verify manufacturer data, material traceability and project-specific requirements. Where safety, pressure containment or structural integrity is involved, obtain approval from the responsible engineer before changing material, process or acceptance criteria.
Element Folio engineering reference. Requirements vary by standard, project and jurisdiction.
