Steel Welding Guide

Steel weldability depends on carbon equivalent, alloy content, thickness, restraint, hydrogen level, heat input, preheat and postweld heat treatment.

Engineering basis

Low-carbon steels are generally easiest to weld; higher-carbon, alloy, Q&T, Cr-Mo, martensitic stainless and tool steels demand progressively tighter controls.

Standards, grades or methods

Common process codes include AWS D1.1 for structural steel, ASME Section IX for procedure/welder qualification in pressure work, API 1104 for pipelines and EN ISO welding standards.

Typical applications

Structural fabrication, pressure piping, tanks, pipelines, machinery, stainless systems and repair work.

Critical checks

Control WPS/PQR, filler classification, preheat/interpass temperature, consumable baking/storage, heat input, PWHT, hardness, NDT and distortion. Match procedure to the exact material and service.

Good engineering practice

Use the current governing code or specification and verify manufacturer data, material traceability and project-specific requirements. Where safety, pressure containment or structural integrity is involved, obtain approval from the responsible engineer before changing material, process or acceptance criteria.
