Steel Density, Weight & Section-Mass Reference

Steel weight calculations support BOQ preparation, lifting plans, transport, costing and structural estimation.

Engineering basis

A practical nominal density of about 7,850 kg/m³ is commonly used for carbon and low-alloy steel. Stainless and specialty alloys vary with composition and should use grade-specific density where accuracy matters.

Standards, grades or methods

Weight is calculated from volume × density; standard sections and pipes often have published mass-per-length values that already account for nominal geometry.

Typical applications

Plate, pipe, bars, structural sections, tanks, fabrication estimates and logistics.

Critical checks

Use actual dimensions, account for tolerances and coatings where relevant, and use published section/pipe masses for procurement when available rather than idealized geometry alone.

Good engineering practice

Use the current governing code or specification and verify manufacturer data, material traceability and project-specific requirements. Where safety, pressure containment or structural integrity is involved, obtain approval from the responsible engineer before changing material, process or acceptance criteria.
