5xxx Series Aluminum
5xxx alloys use magnesium as the principal alloying element and are widely used where corrosion resistance and weldability are critical.
Material basis
They are generally non-heat-treatable and strengthened by solid solution and strain hardening. Higher-magnesium grades require attention to sensitization at elevated service temperatures.
Applications
Marine structures, tanks, pressure vessels, transport bodies, cryogenic equipment and welded fabrication.
Common grades / designations
Common alloys include 5005, 5052, 5083, 5086 and 5454.

Selection and procurement checks
Confirm alloy, temper, product form, dimensions, applicable ASTM/EN/ISO/AA specification, mechanical properties, corrosion environment, joining route and mill certification before approval.
Element Folio engineering reference. Verify the latest governing specification and manufacturer data for final design or procurement.
