Heat-Treatable vs Non-Heat-Treatable Aluminum

Aluminum alloys fall broadly into heat-treatable and non-heat-treatable families, which determines how strength is developed.

Material basis

2xxx, 6xxx and 7xxx are generally heat treatable; 1xxx, 3xxx and 5xxx are generally strengthened by cold work. 4xxx and 8xxx include both special cases.

Applications

This distinction controls fabrication sequence, welding response, repair strategy and final properties.

Common grades / designations

Welding can locally overage or soften heat-treated alloys; cold-worked non-heat-treatable alloys can also soften in the heat-affected zone.

Selection and procurement checks

Confirm alloy, temper, product form, dimensions, applicable ASTM/EN/ISO/AA specification, mechanical properties, corrosion environment, joining route and mill certification before approval.
