Aluminum Corrosion & Protection

Aluminum naturally forms a protective oxide film, but corrosion performance varies strongly with alloy, environment and design.

Material basis

Pitting, crevice corrosion, galvanic corrosion, intergranular corrosion, exfoliation and stress-corrosion cracking can occur in susceptible alloys and environments.

Applications

Use anodizing, conversion coatings, paint, sealants, isolation from dissimilar metals and drainage/detailing where required.

Common grades / designations

Chloride-rich environments, trapped moisture and galvanic contact with more noble metals need particular attention.

Selection and procurement checks

Confirm alloy, temper, product form, dimensions, applicable ASTM/EN/ISO/AA specification, mechanical properties, corrosion environment, joining route and mill certification before approval.
