Cast Aluminum 319

ALUMINUM GRADE · 319

Cast Aluminum 319

319 is an Al-Si-Cu casting alloy widely used where good castability and moderate strength are required.

Alloy basis

Copper improves strength and machinability while silicon supports fluidity.

Typical applications

Engine blocks, cylinder heads, housings, automotive castings and general machinery.

Common tempers / conditions

Heat-treated conditions are used where higher strength or dimensional stability is needed.

Practical application: engine or machinery housing

319 is an aluminum-silicon-copper casting alloy family used for components where casting performance and mechanical properties are balanced. For a machinery housing, assess operating temperature, thermal cycling, local stresses, mating surfaces, dimensional stability and corrosion conditions. Casting process and heat treatment can materially change the result.

How to specify the material

Define the alloy designation, casting process, required condition or heat treatment, drawing tolerances and applicable material standard. Avoid selecting from a generic tensile-strength value without confirming test method, section thickness and production process.

Quality checks for a finished casting

  • Review chemical composition and supplier traceability.
  • Inspect critical surfaces, bosses and machined openings.
  • Agree porosity and defect acceptance criteria where necessary.
  • Check dimensional stability and required machining allowances.
  • Define any pressure test or non-destructive examination based on service risk.

Engineering selection notes

Confirm the exact alloy designation, temper, product form, thickness/diameter, mechanical properties, corrosion environment, joining process, surface treatment and certification. Properties can vary substantially by temper and product form.

QA/QC

For critical service, verify heat/lot traceability, mill certificate, chemical composition, tensile properties, temper, dimensional tolerances and any required NDT or third-party inspection.
