STEEL GRADE · ASTM A36

ASTM A36 Structural Steel

ASTM A36 is a widely used carbon structural steel specification for plates, shapes and bars in general construction and fabrication.

Grade overview

Low-carbon structural steel with composition controlled by product form and thickness under ASTM A36/A36M. Its attraction is reliable weldability, formability and broad availability rather than very high strength.

Typical applications

Typical applications include buildings, platforms, base plates, brackets, supports, frames and general welded structures.

Equivalent / related designations

Commonly compared with EN S235-class structural steels, but equivalence must be checked against product form, thickness, chemistry and mechanical requirements.

Common manufacturers and supply

Widely available from structural steel producers and stockholders globally, including Nucor, ArcelorMittal, Tata Steel, JSW, China Baowu and regional mills.

Fabrication and selection notes

Confirm the exact product standard, edition, dimensions, delivery condition, mechanical properties, impact requirements, heat treatment, welding procedure, corrosion environment and certification. A grade name alone is not sufficient for procurement or design approval.

QA/QC documentation

For critical service, verify heat number traceability, mill test certificate, chemical analysis, tensile/impact results where required, NDT, heat-treatment record and project-specific third-party inspection requirements.

Where ASTM A36 fits

ASTM A36/A36M is commonly specified for general structural steel shapes, plates and bars. Its practical appeal is availability and straightforward fabrication. It should not be treated as a universal steel for pressure vessels, high-temperature piping or fracture-critical structures: those applications require their own material specifications and design checks.

Design example: a welded equipment support

Consider a small welded equipment support with base plates, gussets and rolled sections. ASTM A36 may be a candidate if the governing structural design permits it. Selection still requires checks for load combinations, member stability, weld details, anchor forces, deflection, vibration, exposure and coating life. A grade designation alone cannot demonstrate that the finished support is adequate.

A36 compared with higher-strength structural steel

A572 Grade 50 is a common comparison for higher specified yield strength. A stronger grade may permit smaller sections in some designs, but buckling, deflection, connections, availability and fabrication can control the result. Substitution must follow the actual project specification and design calculations, not a generic grade-equivalence chart.

Procurement and fabrication checks

  1. State the required product form, section dimensions and standard edition.
  2. Review applicable strength, chemistry and test requirements for the supplied thickness.
  3. Confirm welding procedure, consumables and inspection acceptance criteria.
  4. Maintain heat/lot identification and material certificates where required.
  5. Specify corrosion protection and surface preparation for the installed environment.

Source and limitations
