Boron Steel & Press-Hardening Steel
Small boron additions can greatly increase hardenability when nitrogen and oxygen are properly controlled. Automotive press-hardening steels exploit this effect for ultra-high-strength components.
Material and manufacturing basis
Boron is typically added in very small amounts alongside carbon, manganese, aluminium/titanium and other elements. Hot-stamped 22MnB5 is the best-known automotive example.
Common standards and grades
22MnB5 and related press-hardening steel grades; boron-treated construction/agricultural steels also exist.
Typical applications
Automotive safety cells, pillars, bumper reinforcements, agricultural wear parts, fasteners and heat-treated components.
Engineering and procurement checks
Effective boron depends on processing and nitrogen control; coating, furnace atmosphere, quenching rate, hydrogen and spot-welding behavior are important in automotive use.
Manufacturer selection
Source from a mill or qualified stockist able to supply the exact standard, grade, dimensions, delivery condition and certification required. Confirm manufacturer approval status, heat traceability, test certificates, marking and any project-specific third-party inspection.
Element Folio engineering reference. Always verify the latest governing standard, project specification and manufacturer data before procurement or design.
