Carbon Equivalent & Weldability of Steel
Carbon-equivalent formulas estimate hardenability and hydrogen-cracking susceptibility so welding controls can be selected more intelligently.
Engineering basis
Common formulas include IIW carbon equivalent (CEV), PCM and CET; each is suited to particular steel families and composition ranges.
Standards, grades or methods
Project specifications may set maximum CEV/PCM values for structural, line-pipe, offshore or pressure steels in addition to base material standards.
Typical applications
Weld procedure development, preheat selection, material procurement, high-strength structures and pipeline construction.
Critical checks
Carbon equivalent is an indicator, not a complete weldability verdict. Thickness, restraint, hydrogen, heat input, microstructure and service requirements remain essential.
Good engineering practice
Use the current governing code or specification and verify manufacturer data, material traceability and project-specific requirements. Where safety, pressure containment or structural integrity is involved, obtain approval from the responsible engineer before changing material, process or acceptance criteria.
Element Folio engineering reference. Requirements vary by standard, project and jurisdiction.
