Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel
Duplex 2205 is the most widely used duplex stainless grade, combining high strength with strong resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking.
Grade overview
Its composition is balanced to produce approximately mixed ferrite and austenite after correct solution treatment, using chromium, nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen.
Typical applications
Desalination, chemical processing, offshore piping, tanks, heat exchangers and pulp/paper systems.
Equivalent / related designations
UNS S31803 and S32205 are common designations; S32205 has tighter composition requirements. Welding heat input and phase balance require control.
Common manufacturers and supply
Produced by Outokumpu, Alleima, Acerinox, Jindal Stainless, POSCO and other qualified duplex producers.
Fabrication and selection notes
Confirm the exact product standard, edition, dimensions, delivery condition, mechanical properties, impact requirements, heat treatment, welding procedure, corrosion environment and certification. A grade name alone is not sufficient for procurement or design approval.
QA/QC documentation
For critical service, verify heat number traceability, mill test certificate, chemical analysis, tensile/impact results where required, NDT, heat-treatment record and project-specific third-party inspection requirements.
Element Folio engineering reference. Requirements vary by standard edition, product form and manufacturer; verify the latest governing specification.
