Steel Corrosion & Protection Guide

Steel corrosion is an electrochemical process controlled by environment, design, metallurgy, coating condition and exposure time.

Engineering basis

Carbon steel commonly relies on coatings, corrosion allowance, inhibitors or cathodic protection; stainless relies on passive-film stability; weathering steel relies on a protective oxide in suitable climates.

Standards, grades or methods

Protection systems include paint, hot-dip galvanizing, thermal spray, metallic coatings, internal linings, inhibitors and cathodic protection.

Typical applications

Buildings, pipelines, tanks, marine structures, water systems, industrial plants and buried services.

Critical checks

Identify atmospheric category, immersion/buried service, chlorides, pH, temperature, crevices, galvanic couples, coating maintenance and expected service life.

Good engineering practice

Use the current governing code or specification and verify manufacturer data, material traceability and project-specific requirements. Where safety, pressure containment or structural integrity is involved, obtain approval from the responsible engineer before changing material, process or acceptance criteria.
