Steel Pipes & Tubes: Grades, Uses and Selection
Steel pipe and tube products are specified by material grade, manufacturing route, dimensions, pressure class and service. Selection differs for structural tubing, pressure piping, boiler tube, line pipe and mechanical tube.
Material and manufacturing basis
Common materials include carbon steel, low-alloy Cr-Mo, stainless, duplex and specialty nickel-bearing steels. Seamless and welded routes can both satisfy demanding specifications when correctly selected.
Common standards and grades
ASTM A53, A106, A333, A335, A312, A790; API 5L; EN 10216/10217 families; ASME material equivalents are widely used in pressure work.
Typical applications
Chilled-water and utility piping, oil and gas, boilers, refineries, process plants, structural hollow sections, heat exchangers and mechanical systems.
Engineering and procurement checks
Check OD/NPS, schedule or wall thickness, seamless versus welded route, impact requirements, heat treatment, hydrotest/NDT, end preparation, coating/lining and MTC traceability.
Manufacturer selection
Source from a mill or qualified stockist able to supply the exact standard, grade, dimensions, delivery condition and certification required. Confirm manufacturer approval status, heat traceability, test certificates, marking and any project-specific third-party inspection.
Element Folio engineering reference. Always verify the latest governing standard, project specification and manufacturer data before procurement or design.
