Steel Inspection & NDT Guide
Steel quality verification combines document review, visual/dimensional inspection and nondestructive testing appropriate to the product and failure risks.
Engineering basis
Common methods include VT, UT, RT, MT, PT, PMI and hardness testing. Each method detects different discontinuity types and has material/surface limitations.
Standards, grades or methods
Standards vary by product and code; acceptance criteria must come from the governing construction/material standard rather than from the NDT method alone.
Typical applications
Plate, forgings, castings, welds, piping, pressure vessels, structures and stainless/alloy material verification.
Critical checks
Define inspection stage, calibration, technician qualification, scanning coverage, sensitivity, reporting, acceptance criteria and traceability to heat/joint/component number.
Good engineering practice
Use the current governing code or specification and verify manufacturer data, material traceability and project-specific requirements. Where safety, pressure containment or structural integrity is involved, obtain approval from the responsible engineer before changing material, process or acceptance criteria.
Element Folio engineering reference. Requirements vary by standard, project and jurisdiction.
