Electrical and Magnetic Properties of Materials: Conductors, Insulators and Magnetic Behavior

Electrical and magnetic properties determine how materials carry current, store charge, respond to fields and perform in motors, transformers, sensors, electronics and power systems.

Electrical conductivity and resistivity

Conductivity describes how easily electric charge moves through a material; resistivity expresses the opposition to that flow. Copper and silver are excellent conductors, while ceramics and polymers are commonly used as insulators. Temperature, impurities and microstructure can strongly affect values.

Semiconductors

Semiconductors such as silicon sit between conductors and insulators. Their electrical behavior can be deliberately controlled by doping, junction design, temperature and electric fields, making them the basis of modern electronics.

Dielectric behavior

Insulating materials can polarize in an electric field and store electrostatic energy. Dielectric strength, permittivity and loss are important when selecting insulation for cables, capacitors, transformers and high-voltage systems.

Magnetic materials

Ferromagnetic materials can develop strong magnetization. Soft magnetic materials are optimized for repeated magnetization and low losses, while permanent-magnet materials retain magnetization. Ferrites, electrical steels and rare-earth magnets occupy different performance ranges.

Engineering context

Electrical and magnetic data should be evaluated at the relevant frequency, temperature, field strength and processing condition. Geometry and surface condition can also influence component-level performance.
