Electrical & Silicon Steel
Electrical steels are engineered to control magnetic losses and permeability in motors, generators, transformers and other electromagnetic equipment.
Composition & metallurgy
Silicon is a principal alloying element, with chemistry, texture, coating and very low impurity control optimized for magnetic performance. Grain-oriented and non-grain-oriented families are distinct products.
Common grades and standards
GOES (grain-oriented electrical steel) for transformer cores; NGOES (non-grain-oriented electrical steel) for motors and rotating machines. Products are commonly specified by maximum core-loss level, thickness and magnetic properties rather than a simple AISI number.
Applications
Power and distribution transformers, EV traction motors, industrial motors, generators, compressors, appliances and electrical equipment.
Engineering characteristics
Key properties include core loss, permeability, saturation, coating insulation, flatness and punching performance. Thinner gauges can reduce eddy-current losses but increase manufacturing complexity and cost.
Known manufacturers and producer regions
Japan — Nippon Steel, JFE; South Korea — POSCO; China — China Baowu/Wuhan Iron & Steel and other electrical-steel mills; Europe — thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel, voestalpine; India — domestic producers and processors serving transformer and motor markets.
Before specifying or purchasing
Confirm governing standard and edition, product form and dimensions, delivery/heat-treatment condition, mechanical properties, toughness, welding requirements, corrosion or wear environment, inspection/NDT, traceability and mill test certification. Manufacturer capability varies by plant and product line.
