Abrasion-Resistant & Wear Plate Steel
Abrasion-resistant (AR) steels are quenched-and-tempered or otherwise engineered plates designed for long life under sliding, impact and mineral abrasion.
Composition & metallurgy
Low- to medium-carbon alloy steels using Mn, Cr, Ni, Mo and B to achieve through-thickness hardenability while retaining usable toughness.
Common grades and standards
Commercial hardness classes commonly include AR400, AR450, AR500 and higher. Well-known proprietary families include Hardox and comparable mill grades; proprietary names are not universal interchangeable standards.
Applications
Dump bodies, mining equipment, buckets, liners, crushers, hoppers, chutes, recycling machinery and earthmoving equipment.
Engineering characteristics
Hardness is only one selection parameter; impact toughness, bendability, weldability, thickness, service temperature and abrasion mechanism also matter.
Known manufacturers and producer regions
Sweden — SSAB; Europe — Dillinger and other quenched-and-tempered plate producers; Japan — Nippon Steel, JFE; China — major heavy-plate mills; India — JSW and other specialty plate suppliers; global distributors stock multiple proprietary AR brands.
Before specifying or purchasing
Confirm governing standard and edition, product form and dimensions, delivery/heat-treatment condition, mechanical properties, toughness, welding requirements, corrosion or wear environment, inspection/NDT, traceability and mill test certification. Manufacturer capability varies by plant and product line.
