Steel Grade Equivalents & Substitution Guide

Steel cross-reference tables are useful for screening alternatives but cannot prove that two grades are fully interchangeable.

Engineering basis

Two grades may have similar chemistry yet differ in minimum yield strength, impact testing, heat treatment, product-form limits, grain size, NDT or code acceptance.

Standards, grades or methods

Examples often compared include 42CrMo4 and 4140, 100Cr6 and 52100, 1.4301 and 304, 1.4404 and 316L, S355 and various ASTM structural grades—but each comparison needs specification-level review.

Typical applications

Procurement substitutions, international sourcing, maintenance replacement, design conversion and supplier qualification.

Critical checks

Compare complete standards side by side, confirm design-code acceptance and obtain engineer/client approval before substitution. Never rely solely on a commercial equivalence chart.

Good engineering practice

Use the current governing code or specification and verify manufacturer data, material traceability and project-specific requirements. Where safety, pressure containment or structural integrity is involved, obtain approval from the responsible engineer before changing material, process or acceptance criteria.
