Structural Steel Grades

Structural steels are optimized for predictable strength, ductility, toughness, weldability and availability in plates, beams, columns, hollow sections and other load-bearing products.

Composition & metallurgy

Generally low-carbon to low-alloy compositions, with strength controlled through chemistry, rolling practice, microalloying, normalizing, thermomechanical processing or quench-and-temper routes.

Common grades and standards

ASTM A36, A572, A992, A500, A709; EN S235, S275, S355, S420, S460 and higher-strength grades; JIS SS400/SM490 families; region-specific building codes govern actual use.

Applications

Buildings, industrial plants, bridges, pipe racks, warehouses, platforms, towers, supports, stadiums and infrastructure.

Engineering characteristics

Selection requires yield strength, tensile strength, toughness, section availability, weldability, fire design, fatigue category, corrosion protection and code compliance—not simply the nominal grade.

Known manufacturers and producer regions

China — China Baowu, HBIS, Shagang; India — Tata Steel, JSW, SAIL; Japan — Nippon Steel, JFE; South Korea — POSCO, Hyundai Steel; United States — Nucor, Cleveland-Cliffs; Europe — ArcelorMittal, SSAB, Dillinger, voestalpine.

Before specifying or purchasing

Confirm governing standard and edition, product form and dimensions, delivery/heat-treatment condition, mechanical properties, toughness, welding requirements, corrosion or wear environment, inspection/NDT, traceability and mill test certification. Manufacturer capability varies by plant and product line.
